What do stars mean?

Stars are a general indication of a unit's rarity, current growth level, and maximum potential. They have a strong influence in terms of results when using the Hatcher.

Any unit that has multiple star versions will always be able to upgrade.
It will be the exact same unit and power as any other of the same star number when you awaken it to the next level of stars. For example, a 4-star Rapunzel can always be awakened to a 5-star Rapunzel, and all 5-star Rapunzels will always have the exact same stats and abilities. This is true no matter what number of stars your unit arrived at.

The lowest number of stars that a unit can have shows how rare it is.
Any unit that can appear at 3-stars is more common than one with a minimum of 4-stars. This means that if you are guaranteed one 5-star unit in a Hatcher, it is most likely to be a 5-star VERSION of a 3-star (lowest form) unit! If a unit never appears at less than 5-stars (e.g. Kenshin), then it will be much more rare than others.

So, if you get a rare unit, never worry about how many stars it has; you can always awaken it to its maximum potential! It's much better to get a rare unit at 4-stars than a common unit at 5-stars.

As a final note, one bonus of getting units at their lowest star level is that they will be added to your 'Unit Database'. This is your in-game encyclopedia of all units you've owned, so if you get a very rare unit at 5-star, that's great, but you may never be able to fill in that 4-star entry. Just a thought for the dedicated completionists out there!
